If you were the 8 year old girl in Iraq, whose parents had been killed by a bomb (irrespective of whether it were from terrorists or the coalition forces); if you had witnessed your son get into the wrong crowd, begin taking drugs, then commit suicide, right from within the US; if you had your arms dismembered or amputated by the Janjaweed in Darfur, over a resources control + religious conflict that was none of your business; if you needed surgery your family coundn’t afford; if you were a dying girl in India who just discovered that a corporation’s dishonest waste disposal practices within your country (practices they would not be allowed to get away with in their own country) were most probably responsible for your illness, how would you feel or react after reading a blog post or newspaper that effectively says Shit happens, leave things the way they are, until people have an incentive to change?
Maybe we should all be grateful for what we have, and if we want, do our part to make the world a better place? But maybe we should be slow to judge what (fate/God/destiny/the earth / dishonesty and lies of men/ etc…) has dealt into the arms of other helpless souls…maybe its not too bad a thing to extend an arm where one can…and maybe we must not discourage even the feeblest of attempts at rectifying ‘the mess’ we now have to live with. In your example, why can’t more botanists join forces with activists (instead of having one, or the other). Why can’t they become allies who share ideas and tactics on how to effectively tackle the problem?
Granted, some things we’ll probably never know, some things are probably beyond our understanding…but does that mean we shouldn’t try?

Thank you for taking the time to reply. It’s rare, and therefore very valuable, when people give an honest evaluation that’s not all roses! As I read your comment I realized that I didn’t convey my idea’s very well. I went back and re-read the post and found that I slid the most important point into the last paragraph in one sentence…instead of making that the main idea.
